In a world overflowing with brainwashed, mentally retarded rats, victims, neurological abyss as standard fare, and the profane goyim mobs engaged in predetermined Conquest by way of Manufactured Division - one shan't despair all the way with a pal like Shevchenko around. The children abhor Lord of the Flies - presenteth them Shevenko instead! At the very least trade in Salinger for Hegel, and forget not to give the school librarians silencers for their guns when thou arm them! The children abhor Lord of the Flies - presenteth them Shevenko instead! At the very least trade in Salinger for Hegel, and forget not to give the school librarians silencers for their guns when thou arm them! My thorny thoughts, my thorny thoughts, You bring me only woe! Why do you on the paper stand So sadly row on row? ... Why did the winds not scatter you Like dust across the steppes? Why did ill-luck not cradle you To sleep upon its breast? ... My thoughts, my melancholy thoughts, My children, tender shoots! I nursed you, brought you up -- and now What shall I do with you? ... Go to Ukraine, my homeless waifs! Your way make to Ukraine Along back roads like vagabonds, But I'm doomed here to stay. There you will find a heart that's true And words of welcome kind, There honesty, unvarnished truth And, maybe, fame you'll find ... So welcome them, my Motherland, Ukraine, into your home! Accept my guileless, simple brood And take them for your own!

Knowing the rich and powerful legacy of the great Slavic poets is like being in on a profound secret. And one of the most obscure language traditions in English translation is that of the Ukraine. So when I saw this out-of-print translation of great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko - Ukraine's equivalent to Pushkin (Russian), Mickiewicz (Polish), Macha (Czech) and Gundulic (Croatian) - for an unbeatable price on Amazon, I went for it straight away. Shortly afterwards, I can say that I have a new favorite Romantic poet. Like the aforementioned poets (except maybe Gundulic), Shevchenko lived a life only a great poet could have lived; born as a serf, worked in St Petersburg, had his freedom bought by friends, became successful but chose to write in Ukrainian, before being sent to Siberia for association with a secret society. His life is quite tragic, to say the least, which is important because it gives his poetry (which is quite well translated) a powerful underpinning of emotion that is rather unique. While Macha is warm Shevchenkos feelings are frigid. But despite their frigidity they are no less powerful or affective. Anybody with any love of poetry ignores Shevchenkos beautiful and powerful verse at their own risk, and Shevchenko being out-of-print in English is a crying shame at the very least.

This Soviet anthology of work by Taras Shevcenko provides an excellent introduction for English readers to Ukraine's greatest poet of the nineteenth century. Some readers will unquestionably be shocked by the numerous anti-Semitic comments which appear in this book but they should recognize that it is only Catholics and Poles that Shevcenko urges his readers to murder. Taras Shevchenko may not be for everyone however his importance in establishing Ukrainian as a literary language is broadly acknowledged. While several of the poems unquestionably have a blood-thirsty tone, there is some truth to the claim made by the publishers that Shevchenko was first and foremost an enemy of the Tsar's authoritarian regime and an advocate of justice for the down-trodden Ukrainian peasants. This particular edition is real treasure as it contains many illustrations including reproductions of many of Shevchenko's oil paintings, drawings and water-colours. The footnotes are very helpful in explaining the historical background of the events recounted in Shevchenko's poems.

Worth it if, you know, you live in Ukraine and are trying desperately to understand this culture. I mean, there are statues of him everywhere.
