Received free via a Goodreads giveaway. A straightforward and well presented aid to writing historical fiction. While not really a writer of fiction, there was still a lot of valuable information I could take from the book and apply to my own writing.

This is a very helpful book which explains historical fiction writing in a very straightforward way. I especially loved the little quotes and tips from authors. I received this book from a Goodreads First reads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

This is the best book of advice for aspiring writers that I've read yet, and I've read a few. The focus is, of course, on historical fiction, with some useful exercises and particular advice on that genre, but there is a lot of solid advice on core aspects of storytelling that are applicable across all genres. The examples, from physic distance to free indirect style to the pros and cons of past vs present tense, are clear and easy to understand. I'm keeping it within easy reach on my desk, along with several other indispensable reference books. And now, having gone through it once, I will have to go through it again, and make notes of all the novels she quoted bits from, to hunt them down and read them myself.

This is the first "how to" creative writing book I've looked at since college (some 20 years ago), so I don't really have a comparison. There are a lot of very good and useful tips. I haven't done the exercises yet but will probably go back to those. The author seems to have a bias against self publishing or any company that provides self publishing services. I'm not sure I would agree with her assessment in that regard, but there is still useful advice about how to package your product after yo This is the first "how to" creative writing book I've looked at since college (some 20 years ago), so I don't really have a comparison. I have nothing to compare it to as this is the first one I've finished in this genre but I think it was pretty good. I like that it uses writing workshop style to actually get me writing.

Excellent book, packed with great ideas for breaking into this genre. “Remember, you are not writing history. You are writing stories. You are writing a novel about something that never happened about people that never existed.”
