Toarmino follows last summer's "Graphic" micro-chap with a second installment even more playful, surprising, and linguistically wide-ranging than the first. This writer's distinctive take on "found poetry" involves "reconstructing" poems from images of celebrities in graphic tees. (The pictures are included at the back of the micro-chap, which helps to keep the poems free from distraction and disruption on the first read-through, while also providing the reader with the pleasure of a second, slo Toarmino follows last summer's "Graphic" micro-chap with a second installment even more playful, surprising, and linguistically wide-ranging than the first. This writer's distinctive take on "found poetry" involves "reconstructing" poems from images of celebrities in graphic tees. (The pictures are included at the back of the micro-chap, which helps to keep the poems free from distraction and disruption on the first read-through, while also providing the reader with the pleasure of a second, slower read, scrolling back and forth between the poems and their corresponding pictures, trying to catch corresponding elements.) Lapidary and clear-eyed (noting in one poem that "even birthday girls die" and in another that "hell is the worst") but open the the play-full surprises of enjambment and juxtaposition ("everything / a riot / of yes // this body / is a runaway / howl"), the collection speaks with a sense of absolute authority over its subjects that's strikingly far from the style you'll find in any of the poet's other collections - it's enjoyable to give yourself over to this voice. "Graphic 2" imaginatively brings these celebrities closer to the reader, but its echoes (esp. e.g. the Barron Trump poem) underscore just how distant they really are.
